About The Authors

When it comes to the subject of overindulgence, Jean Illsley Clarke, Connie Dawson, and David J. Bredehoft are recognized experts. In both keynotes and workshops (individually and collectively), they offer creative and convincing examples on how overindulgence affects the lives of children and what to do instead.

Jean Illsley Clarke, Ph. D. author of more than 20 books including How Much is Too Much? Raising Likeable, Responsible, Respectful Children - From Toddlers To Teens - In An Age of Overindulgence, Self-Esteem: A Family Affair and Growing Up Again: Parenting Ourselves, Parenting Our Children. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Human Development. Jean has been awarded three honorary doctorates. The first, an Honorary Doctor of Human Services from Sierra University, the second, an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Concordia University, St. Paul, and an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2013. She is a teaching and supervising member of the International Transactional Analysis Association and a Nationally Certified Family Life Educator. Recently she was named Distinguished Alumna of the Year and given the Larry Wilson Award by the College of Human Ecology at the University of Minnesota.


Connie Dawson, Ph.D., is author of How Much is Too Much? Raising Likable, Responsible, Respectful Children - From Toddlers To Teens - In An Age of Overindulgence  Growing Up Again: Parenting Ourselves, Parenting Our Children, and Life Beyond Shame: Rewriting the RulesConnie had professional experience as a public school educator, a university professor of counselor education, a consultant to schools, a therapist specializing in families and individuals affected by adoption, and an author of books related to parents and families. Her current interest is the study of how shame and shaming affects the functioning of systems, most particularly, families. After identifying the act of overindulging children as unintentionally shaming, she was anxious to define and unravel the potential damage of overindulgence and what could replace it. She is the mother of three, grandmother of eight.


David Bredehoft, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, Certified Family Life Educator 
is Professor Emeritus, Psychology and Family Studies, Concordia University St. Paul
 and Former Chair, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. David has published over 100 articles in journals and magazines and has presented papers at national conventions, all relating to interests in psychology, parenting, and families. David is author of How Much is Too Much? Raising Likeable, Responsible, Respectful Children - From Toddlers To Teens - In An Age of Overindulgence and Family Life Education: Integrating Theory and Practice.
